Boating Business | £75m redevelopment plans

INDUSTRY DATABASE

PREMIER MARINAS LTD

Premier Marinas has been granted planning permission for a £75m redevelopment of Devon’s Noss on Dart Marina.

Noss on Dart was bought by Premier in 2016 and consists of 37 acres of foreshore and woodland set on the bank of the River Dart opposite Dartmouth.

The site was formerly the Philip & Son shipbuilding yard but has operated as a marina and boatyard since shipbuilding stopped in the late 1990s with much of the site currently derelict.

Best marina

“The redevelopment of Noss on Dart is hugely important to us,” said Premier’s CEO Pete Bradshaw. “We want to build something very special here, to create a sustainable place around the best marina in the UK.”

He added: “This is a glorious site and the majority of it will remain in our hands for a long time to come, so it really matters to us.”

Plans involve the creation of a new marina with 232 berths, a dry stack for 100 smaller motor craft, a boatyard with a 75-tonne boat hoist servicing private, fishing and commercial craft across South Devon, 21 marine trade commercial units, a 50-bedroom hotel, new car parking arrangements and a heritage centre to celebrate the site’s history.

Demolition

Premier’s plans also include a passenger ferry link to Dartmouth.

Demolition of the site’s many derelict buildings will begin this autumn and will be followed by work on the replacement boatyard, car park and commercial buildings.

Renewal of the floating marina will start in the winter of 2019/20 and once completed, the development of the hotel, Philip’s building and public areas will go ahead.

It is anticipated work on these elements will be completed by mid 2022 with the majority of the residential development taking place afterwards.

SYTT has launched a new deck hardware company

INDUSTRY DATABASE

SUPERYACHT TENDER AND TOYS

Superyacht Tenders and Toys has launched a new deck hardware company – Shipyard Supply Co (SSCo).

Since its launch in 2011, SYTT has seen year-on-year growth in all aspects of its business, particularly in its deck equipment division.

The new business will be headed by Luke Porter, formerly of Oyster Yachts and will allow each company to focus on its respective market sectors.

“By launching Shipyard Supply Co, we are evolving with the superyacht market and meeting the rapid growth in the demand for deck hardware,” said SYTT co-founder, Josh Richardson. “The new business will operate as a separate entity handling the manufacture and supply of everything from tender whips and fenders to custom stainless steel and carbon projects.”

He added: “This allows SSCo to go beyond the scope of SYTT products and form new relationships and distributorships within the industry and we are very excited to have Luke onboard to manage all of this.”

Peter Emmons, in charge of technical sales at SYTT, will join Luke at SSCo as technical manager, while continuing to work with current SYTT clients.

The RYA will no longer be the national authority for UK powerboat racing

INDUSTRY DATABASE

ROYAL YACHTING ASSOCIATION

The RYA is to cease in its role as the national authority for UK powerboat racing.

The organisation says the decision – to take effect from January 1 2019 – follows a review of the status of the sport and an evaluation of the risks and responsibilities associated with acting as the national authority.

In a statement, the RYA said its Board has been monitoring the situation since the implementation of the Cardy report in 2015/16 and following the 2017 season determined that the situation was no longer sustainable long-term.

“The Board has concluded that the financial, safety and reputational challenges presented are disproportionate to the number of clubs and competitors now actively racing,” said the statement.

The powerboat racing department will continue to operate as normal for the remainder of the 2018 season, including issuing licences and ratifying the results of British championships, world and British speed records.

The office will close in December 2018 and no licences will be issued by the RYA for the 2019 season.

Boating Business | Arcona 435 to make world debut at Southampton

INDUSTRY DATABASE

ARCONA YACHTS

Arcona Yachts’ 43ft Arcona 435 featuring an efficient sail design will make her world premiere at TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show.

Designed for performance and comfort with optimised weight, the Arcona 435’s sail plan will be with a 106% overlapping headsail and a relatively larger mainsail than previous models. She has a wider stern than the Arcona 430, which gives her a more spacious saloon and a larger cockpit without compromising on her sailing ability on all angles.

“The 435 has an efficient sail design, a low weight and the same stability known in every Arcona yacht,” said designer Stefan Qviberg. “We liked the hull shape and line of the 430 so for the 435, we’ve built on our learning from her predecessor while modernising the boat inside and out.”

Vacuum infusion technology

Her lay-up, which incorporates a 20mm Divinycell foam core, employs the latest vacuum infusion technology. All bulkheads are bonded to the hull and deck for added strength.

Arcona 435 features twin carbon wheels and a cockpit table that fits into a recess in the cockpit floor. There is a choice between an open or semi-closed transom. A plumb bow, alongside the wide stern, allows for plenty of speed and comfortable sailing.

The owner of the first 435 yacht in production said they were ‘keen to have a yacht that performed well’, so that they could liven things up when required for fast passages and a spot of racing. “Given her powerful hull and rig design, I believe the 435 will deliver everything I need and want from my yacht.”

Boating Business | Easy mast lowering on show

Balpha Mast will show its foldable mast system on board Balpha Global

INDUSTRY DATABASE

BALPHA MAST

Balpha Mast will show its foldable mast system on board Balpha Global at TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show.

After intensive engineering the design of the carbon fibre system has now been finalised with UK and US patents granted.

The system has been produced by Ceilidh Composite Technologies in close collaboration with inventor and MD Stuart Balfour who has been demonstrating its capabilities on a tour of the River Thames, passing under 29 bridges.

Easy lowering

“No bridge on the route was a problem to pass for Balpha Global with the easy lowering mast,” he said.

“For boaters and bystanders on shore it was a remarkable sight, seeing a sailing yacht under sail sailing the River Thames despite all the bridges.

“This is exactly what I intended with developing the Balpha Mast system: sailing on waters that normally are inaccessible due to height restrictions.”

Bridge clearance

In addition, Balpha Mast is to sponsor the Great Loop, a continuous waterway in North America that recreational mariners can travel. The route includes part of the Atlantic, Gulf Intracoastal Waterways, the Great Lakes, Canadian Heritage Canals and the inland rivers of America’s heartland, an average distance of 5,600 to 6,600 miles.

“The maximum bridge clearance for the Great Loop is 5.82m, so regular sailing yachts cannot navigate the loop without removing their masts,” said Stuart. “However fitted with a Balpha Mast system even sailing yachts can navigate the Great Loop sailing instead of motoring. What a great experience it must be sailing the Great Loop on wind.”

Balpha Mast will be located at marina berth M266.

INDUSTRY DATABASE

CLIPPER VENTURES PLC

Zhuhai, China, is to become a Clipper yacht race host port and team partner following a multi-million pound three-edition deal.

The debut partnership will see ‘islands and sailing’ city Zhuhai, along with Zhuhai Jiuzhou Holdings, collaborate with race organisers Clipper Ventures, on the 2019-20, 2021-22 and 2023-24 editions of the global event.

“Located close to Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macao, Zhuhai is a place with strong geographic advantages, beautiful islands and coastline, excellent wind conditions for sailing, convenient transportation and a comfortable climate, which are all crucial for water sports and tourism development,” said Clipper Race CEO William Ward.

Three China stopovers

The inclusion of Zhuhai in the Clipper 2019-20 Race will see three stopovers in China, as the city joins existing host port partners Sanya in the south of the country and Qingdao in the north.

Zhuhai Jiuzho Holdings already has extensive experience in hosting major sailing events, including the 2016 and 2017 China National Sailing Regatta, as well as its own Jiuzho Cup.

Zhuhai also has one of the largest yacht-build bases in China and the new partnership is expected to bring further development opportunities for the city’s boat building industry.

The Clipper Race fleet will be berthed at Zhuhai Jiuzhou Marina during the stopover, which is expected to take place in early 2020. A boat will also be named after Zhuhai.

Tony Bullimore famously survived at sea after his boat capsized during the 1996 Vendée Globe

Seasoned sailor Tony Bullimore has died aged 79 and having achieved over 30 Atlantic crossings.

The international yachtsman, famed for having survived under the overturned hull of his boat after a storm capsized it during the 1996 Vendée Globe solo round the world race, had circa 150 trophies to his name and took part in several round the world races.

More than 20 years ago, in January 1997, when his IMOCA 60 monohull Exide Challenger capsized in the Southern Ocean 2,200km off the coast of Australia, Mr Bullimore endured five days inside the hull surviving on a meagre ration of chocolate and water before being rescued by the Royal Australian Navy.

However, the Bristol-dwelling ex-Royal Marine, then aged 57, didn’t let the incident put him off his sport. Before the Vendée Globe, he had been racing for 25 years and had won the 1985 Round Europe and Round Britain races with trimaran Apricot.

He skippered a team that came second in the 2005 Qatar-held Oryx Quest race for multi-hulled craft. A year later he began a solo world record attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 70 days, losing contact with his support crew for 11 days.

In 2010, Mr Bullimore’s multihull Spirit of Antigua overturned off France, though he wasn’t onboard at the time. He later raced her in an attempt to set a new record for sailing around Antarctica.

A businessman as much as a sailor, Mr Bullimore founded Bristol’s Bamboo Club music venue and also ran the city’s Granary Club for two decades.
