Sta-Lok has renewed its partnership with the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, returning as the official standing rigging supplier for the 2019-20 edition.

Sta-Lok debuted during the 2017-2018 race, installing rigging hardware on the fleet of 70ft racing yachts for the 40,000 nautical mile circumnavigation.

“This is testament to both the products and the level of support and service we have received from Sta-Lok,” said Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Clipper Race founder and chairman. “We look forward to continuing our relationship, further testing its standing rigging throughout the next gruelling edition and showcasing Sta-Lok solutions on a global scale.”

Sta-Lok is suppling more than 450 bespoke fittings and 2150m of wire to kit out the fleet of Clipper 70s ahead of the upcoming circumnavigation as part of a nine-month refit process.

Incredible endurance

Every wire and fitting is being replaced with all the masts stepped with Sta-Lok fittings.

“The Clipper Race offers us the chance to show the Sta-Lok products quality and incredible endurance during this intense and iconic adventure,” said Terry Barfield, Sta-Lok MD. “We are looking forward to working with the Clipper Race on the 2019-20 edition.”

He added: “Product testing doesn’t come much tougher than a 40,000 nautical mile circumnavigation and during Sta-Lok’s debut in the Clipper 2017-18 Race the rigging hardware installed on the fleet of 70ft racing yachts withstood every challenge as they raced around the world including 14m waves and hurricane force winds in the North Pacific Ocean.”

The ‘Egremont’ is at risk of deconstruction Photo: Egremont Trust

Sharpness Shipyard,Gloucester, in conjunction with the Egremont Trust, has announced its intention to begin deconstruction of a historic Mersey ferry unless an alternative solution is put forward.

The Egremont was launched in 1951 and was built by Dartmouth shipbuilder Philip & Sons to provide a vital link between the Wirral and Liverpool. Her hull is characteristic of her origins and her design reflects her passenger carrying and sea-worthy qualities. She spent her later life as a club ship and training vessel in Salcombe in Devon.

The ferry was moved to Sharpness Shipyard in late 2016 for repairs and conservation work before funding ceased. The hull is largely finished and the remainder of the ship has been stripped out pending a confirmed end use.

As a sizeable vessel and part-completed project, Egremont could be re-purposed as a venue for watersports training, hotel accommodation, function/exhibition space, or a restaurant facility.  With only limited draught, she is ideally suited to a natural harbour or estuary.

Records for this vessel are held by the Egremont Trust and Dartmouth Museum. If deconstruction goes ahead, a formal entry will be created for the ship on the National Archive of Historic Vessels and held, in perpetuity, by National Historic Ships UK.
