Marlow’s environmentally friendly ropes will be used on board the SailGP fleet

SailGP has collaborated with rope manufacturer Marlow Ropes.

Marlow will serve as official rope supplier with its ropes onboard SailGP’s race boats through to 2022.

Marlow Ropes will supply SailGP with high-performing lines from its new eco-conscious ranges, including the bio-based Dyneema fiber for use onboard the high-speed F50 foiling catamarans and Blue Ocean dock lines made from 100% recycled waste from plastic bottles to aid docking.

“Not only is Marlow Ropes an industry leader, but they share our passion for sustainable innovation,” said SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts. “Their products provide the impeccable quality needed to help power our race boats, and they are achieving that in an environmentally responsible manner.

“This is a key part of the marine industry’s future and we’re proud to help promote the acceleration of change through this important partnership.”

Performance

Marlow’s Blue Ocean dock lines provide an eco-alternative to standard polyester ropes, while still offering strength and stretch performance.

The rope is made from yarn manufactured from recycled waste plastic bottles, with 7.5 bottles incorporated in every metre of Blue Ocean dock line.

Marlow’s Bio-based Dyneema fibre has identical technical characteristics and performance as conventional Dyneema, but has a reduced reliance on fossil fuels, using products from waste in the pulp and timber industry as its primary raw material.

Natasha Lambert and her father Gary plot the navigation for her ARC challenge

B&G is supporting disabled sailor and adventurer Natasha Lambert in her latest challenge, the ARC 2020.

Natasha began sailing at age nine, and despite being born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy has since been enduring various challenges and pushing herself to the limit and raise money for charity.

Her Bavaria Nautitech Open 46 – Blown Away – is fitted with a full B&G system including Zeus3, Triton² instrument displays, NAC3 autopilot computer, H90 radio with AIS and H50 handheld radio.

Natasha’s father, Gary, has developed a sip and puff control system, which is integrated with the B&G system on board, allowing Natasha to control the boat herself.

The first part of Natasha’s latest adventure was getting Blown Away from the UK to Gran Canaria, ready for the start of the event.

“Her system is integrated into the autopilot, so when she needs to control the sheets, she operates her tongue switch, which both changes the function of the straw from helm to sheets, and activates the autopilot,” said Amanda Lambert, Natasha’s mum. “This helps her to maintain her course whilst she adjusts the sheets, and everything worked impeccably.”

The ARC begins on November 22.

A skipper can also view and record the images transmitted from OSCAR’s cameras.While OSCAR is being put through its paces on solo non-stop round the world race boats, its applications elsewhere are already far-reaching ranging from pleasure boats to commercial vessels.

More than half of Marlow’s yachting range is manufactured using sustainable materials

Blue Ocean Doublebraid is Marlow Ropes’ latest addition to its eco-conscious Blue Ocean product range manufactured from sustainable materials.

The heat-set braid-on-braid Doublebraid is made from 100% recycled waste plastic bottles and designed to offer both strength and stretch performance.

The Blue Ocean Doublebraid follows the release of Marlow’s Blue Ocean Dockline, which offers sailors an eco-alternative to standard polyester ropes.

Since the launch of the Blue Ocean Dockline in 2018, more than half of Marlow’s yachting range is now manufactured using sustainable materials.

“It is important to us at Marlow that we take responsibility to become more sustainable and provide our customers with more rope options,” said Marlow’s leisure marine director Paul Honess. “We have worked hard over the last couple of years to eliminate plastics from our ranges, lower our carbon footprint and introduce sustainable materials.

“With half of our range now made using these sustainable materials we are getting closer to achieving our target of using 100% reliance on recycled materials by 2030.

The line is available on the reel as standard and also as spliced finished assemblies on request.
